The Avian Primer is a New TTRPG Book that Celebrates Birds, Storytelling, and Conservation

Hunters Entertainment has announced with Double Proficiency the upcoming Kickstarter launch of The Zoologist’s Primer: Birds, the latest entry in the acclaimed Natural Library Collection, arriving on Kickstarter April 28, 2026.
Unlike traditional bestiaries or monster manuals, The Zoologist’s Primer: Birds focuses on the real-world behaviors, habitats, and cultural relationships of birds, giving tabletop roleplaying game players a way to incorporate wildlife into their stories in thoughtful and meaningful ways.
The book features over 100 bird species, along with insights into their diets, behaviors, folklore, and the ways humans have historically interacted with them.
Importantly, the book does not include combat stats or hunting guides. Instead, it encourages players to think about wildlife as part of their worldbuilding, storytelling, and roleplaying experiences.
“Many fantasy games focus on fighting creatures,” said Ivan Van Norman of Hunters Entertainment. “This book focuses on living alongside them.”
The volume also continues the Natural Library Collection’s unique “fantasy foraging” tradition, including topics such as:
- Ethical feather collection
- Bottling bird songs
- Recognizing eggs
- Using abandoned nests in crafting and storytelling
The campaign will also feature a conservation initiative, with a portion of the project’s proceeds donated to real-world bird sanctuaries. Backers will vote for their bird champions representing various charities which will receives the funding.
As an early-backer reward, supporters who pledge within the first 72 hours will receive a limited-edition hummingbird enamel pin.
The Kickstarter launches April 28, 2026.
