Wizards of the Coast have once again reached back to their treasure trove of past published adventures to put together a “refreshed for 5th Edition” series of fun. Quests From the Infinite Staircase contains six classic D&D adventures from the late 1970s/early 1980s, each re-written to accommodate the 5th Edition ruleset, yet still remain true to the original story. You can choose to run each adventure on its’ own, or build a campaign that will take you players from level 1 to 13. What binds each of the adventures is the Infinite Staircase.
What is the Infinite Staircase? “The Infinite Staircase spirals endlessly in a vast, dreamlike expanse, twisting upward and downward to countless doors linked to every world and plane of existence.” Simply put, an extra-dimensional path that leads to all places. Think of the print Relativity by Dutch artist M.C. Escher; stairs and landing in all directions. On the Infinite Staircase, the concept of gravity is only relative to the direction of the stair you traverse. You could easily look up and see other travelers looking down upon you. Each landing is occupied by one unique door for each location; taking on the characteristics of the destination. Travel between landings could take minutes, hours or even days as there is not set distance between them. There’s a nice handy chart that you could use to roll for random destinations and door descriptions.
The six included adventures are true classics: The Lost City (1982), When a Star Falls (1984), Beyond the Crystal Cave (1983), Pharaoh (1982), The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth (1982), and Expedition to the Barrier Peaks (1976). After each adventure, your characters will find a door that leads to the Infinite Staircase and will cross paths with a noble genie by the name of Nafas, who will send them on to their next door and adventure. Want to deviate from the printed campaign? Wizards of the Coast has truly provided you with a tool to make that and many other opportunities possible. The appendices are full of interesting creatures and some new magic items, even items to assist your players with Expedition to the Barrier Peaks (IYKYK). By injecting the Infinite Staircase into your campaign, whether homebrew or existing published adventures, you now have infinite opportunities for your players to take your campaign to new heights. I’ve already have so many ideas running through my head for my next campaign.
