Operation Vanguard is a mission for the 2d20 version of Achtung! Cthulhu and picks up where A Quick Trip to France, from the Quick Start Guide, left off. The mission is broken into three acts and covers the breadth of the setting – historical aspects of the war blended with the Cthulhu Mythos.
One thing I really like about these Achtung! Cthulhu missions is that they aren’t “in your face” combat but rather employ proper planning, stealth, and tactics. It’s not about bursting down the door and shooting down the opponents; it’s more clandestine where time is an enemy unless the PCs act properly.
Another thing I like about these missions is their simplicity combined with memorable encounters. Or rather, they are potentially memorable if the heroes follow the mission brief and don’t go way off the rails. But… it is set in World War II and can take any number of turns based on what the players and GM want. Coincidentally, there’s actually a sidebar regarding this very issue.
The mission does not include an overarching storyline, being more of one mission within a collection of missions comprising a career. It does introduce a new organization, brings the characters to a new area, and continues exploring the occult and horror aspect of the setting.
