Fandom Acquires Fanatical

San Francisco, CA (February 24, 2021) – Fandom, Inc., the world’s largest fan platform with more than 330 million monthly users, today announced that it has completed an acquisition of Fanatical, a leading gaming e-commerce platform.

Fanatical offers a growing catalog of over 8,000 digital games, ebooks and e-learning courses from more than 1,000 official publisher and developer partners, and has sold 80 million officially licensed game keys and ebooks to customers in 200 countries. With more than 150 million gamers coming to each month, this acquisition will introduce Fanatical’s passionately curated, unique product bundles to an even larger global gaming audience.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Fandom to advance its vision to be the entertainment and gaming fan’s first choice for community and experience,” said Perkins Miller, CEO of Fandom. “Fandom’s audience scale combined with Fanatical’s deep gaming catalog will accelerate both businesses beyond their already massive year-over-year revenue growth in the explosive gaming category. The acquisition will help extend Fandom’s connection with the gaming community across their consumer journey while providing the Fanatical brand the mindshare it deserves with its competitive product breadth and consumer first curation.”

“Everyone here at Fanatical is thrilled to become part of the Fandom family. The synergies between our two companies are undeniable and the opportunities this acquisition presents are both incredibly exciting and vast,” added Craig Johnson, Managing Director of Focus Multimedia.

More than 330 million entertainment and gaming fans come to Fandom every month to explore, contribute to, and celebrate the world of movies, TV and gaming. Fandom’s gaming audience has grown +45% YoY making it the #1 source in the world for gaming info, tips and cheats, as the category continues to surge. By adding gaming e-commerce through Fanatical, this acquisition deepens Fandom’s direct-to-consumer business and accelerates conversion across all platform touchpoints, creating a unique “full-funnel” relationship with the gaming fan. Connecting Fandom’s gaming fans directly with the games they already love and games they will discover through data-driven bundling and personalization will unlock incredible consumer value and unmatched rich user data and insights.

This is Fandom’s second major gaming acquisition. Curse Media, acquired in 2019 from Twitch, brought Gamepedia—the largest gaming wiki platform—and D&D Beyond—the #1 digital toolset for Dungeons & Dragons gameplay—into the Fandom family. These acquisitions have contributed to Fandom’s strong digital goods, subscription and media revenue growth far outpacing the industry.
