He Who Laughs Last Cthulhu Dark Scenario on Kickstarter

Laughing isn’t Always Pleasant

New standalone horror role-playing scenario on Kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/davesokolowski/he-who-laughs-last-a-cthulhu-dark-rpg-scenario

Dave Sokolowski, contributor to the Call of Cthulhu Masks of Nyarlathotep Companion, is launching his first Kickstarter to seek funding for his modern horror scenario, He Who Laughs Last. This scenario is directly influenced by the HP Lovecraft story “Beyond the Gate of the Silver Key,” and lovers of modern horror, weird tales, and film noir will find the clue trail and NPCs delightful and dangerous.

He Who Laughs Last has been play-tested multiple times, both by Dave and blind-testers, and it will launch on Kickstarter with the scenario, cover and layout complete. The Kickstarter campaign will feature the PDF available for $7 and a high-quality print copy available for $25 (which includes US shipping; international shipping adds $10). There are also multiple avenues for backers to participate and collaborate in the project’s completion, ranging from developing customized character sheets to playing in online games, all the way to helping design three of the key NPCs.

Finally, Dave has collaborated with two key artists who will provide a unique look and feel to the whole project. Cartographer Jake Coolidge has completed not only large and small-scale maps for the scenario, but has designed the cover and book layout as well. Furthermore, artist Mike Dubisch, well known for his Lovecraft-inspired illustrations of monsters and madness, will complete four full-page black and white illustrations for the project, bringing some of the key scenario scenes to life to round out the book’s content.

About the Game:

Using the rules-light Cthuhlu Dark system designed by Graham Walmsley, this scenario is a self-contained RPG that drops a set of friends into contemporary Los Angeles, where their friend Becca has recently committed suicide. The scenario opens at Becca’s funeral as her father pleads with her friends – the investigators – to dig into the mystery of her death that the police have deemed “open and shut.” It seems that Becca’s previous boss, a rapidly successful comedian, may be at the center of the mystery, and there are multiple clues to involve the group.

From there the investigators explore many facets of modern Los Angeles, all the while getting closer to the heart of a mystery that seems to turn right back on the party itself. While the scenario starts as a straight-forward murder mystery, it quickly turns into a tale of suspicion, paranoia, and shifting realities. As the PCs get closer and closer to the truth, they find they themselves are at the center of the mystery, with death and madness as the only certain resolutions.

Nearly 20,000 words have been written for this scenario, allowing for a long and satisfying exploration of modern LA, where something dangerous is definitely brewing. Are you willing to investigate why your friend Becca died? Find out in He Who Laughs Last.
